For this view it is necessary to have a .bmp or Jpeg file in the project directory. It usually comprises of terrain or cadastral information. The map view places the map behind the object data created in PEN3D. It is a backdrop which often helps with interpreting DTM data.
Before the map can be used it must be registered. To register a map with PEN3D the user must have two points on the map and the known distance between these two points.
To Register A Map
Select Open File followed by OK. If map already registered simply select option Select a project file and highlight the appropriate file in the list box.
Select the Map file followed by Open.
The next step is to identify to locations on the map where the coordinates are known.
In this picture the two reference locations are visible along with the coordinates entered by the user.
The next step is to press the Preview button to show the contours over the map. If the contours are acceptable simply Press OK otherwise relocate the reference points or change the coordinates of the reference points until the satisfactory accuracy is achieved.
In some instances there is not any DTM and the coordinates of the reference points would be obtain by other means.
Once the map has been located the Map is added to the Project File along with the transform information and a Description of the Map for easy reference to display the DTM over the Map.
