The Quiet PC
Noise Mapping Australia has been researching and building quiet computers for several years. It is quite difficult to obtain good reliable information on the actual noise levels of computers and components.
Now with the advent of the PC based home media centre it is increasingly important to ensure that the media centre is quiet so that full enjoyment of home theatre can be experienced.
NMA consults and constructs low-noise PC's with guaranteed noise level emissions.
We have built high performance PC's that could be installed in bedrooms, operate at full CPU usage and not disturb sleep.
Typical noise levels from commercially available PC's at 0.5 m from the front face of the computer:
Dual Xeon - Full load 55 dB(A)
Dual Xeon - Low load 45 dB(A)
P4 - Full load with failing northbridge fan 62 dB(A)
Typical noise levels from a well specified quiet PC but still using fans
Athlon (Quiet Case) - Full load 35 dB(A)
A noise level of 35 dB(A) at 0.5 m is quieter than most office air conditioners and quieter that most living rooms. A home media centre based on this system would not affect the audio, in the quietest moments.
